In the past Alex Russell's Lagrein handiwork has been awarded two gold, two silver and two trophies for best Italian Varietal and best Organic Varietal at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show. Grown on an organic vineyard in Barmera, these grapes thrive in the hot Riverland climate. Wine writer Max Allen describes Riverland Lagrein as a square peg in a round hole - growing so well having originated in the Italian Alps. Almost black in colour with black tea aroma, dark fruits and spicy French oak, this mighty red is not for the faint hearted.
The 2016 Lagrein is no exception already awarded gold at the 2016 Australian Alternative Wine Show.
TASTING NOTES: Fourteen days on skins, 20-22 degree ferments is the stuff gold medals are made of. Purple red to black, black tea and black cherry, this wine has gone onto 20% new French oak with the balance into reconditioned French. The oak will build structure into this wine and carry it through 5 years or more in the cellar. A rich, tannic wine with colour, complexity and oak - drink this with dark chocolate or rich meat dishes.
